GOLF.GARA: Rory McIlroy opens ’12-round event’ alongside well-rested Scottie Scheffler at FedEx St. Jude Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, the two best players in the world, will tee off side by side Thursday at TPC Southwind to open the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

For McIlroy, a three-time FedExCup champion, this week is just one leg of a longer race.

“I almost try to view the Playoffs as one big, long tournament, like a 12-round event,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “I’ve been lucky enough to do pretty well on these things over the years, so I’ll try to add another one to the list.”

When Kaleiya Romero tees it up this week at The Standard Portland Classic, she won’t just be competing on the LPGA Tour, she’ll be doing it in a state that already feels like home.

The 24-year-old from San Jose, California, arrives at Columbia Edgewater Country Club sitting at No. 2 in the Epson Tour’s Race for the Card, trailing fellow rookie Lauren Olivares in the standings that determine who earns LPGA Tour membership for 2027. It’s the latest milestone in a rookie season that has turned into one of the breakout stories of the year on the LPGA’s official developmental tour, and one that traces directly back to a detour Romero never expected to take: a season on the coaching staff at the University of Oregon.

Champion in 2023, the 25-year-old came close to winning the event for a second time last year as he lost out to England’s Marco Penge by one shot despite a closing eagle in a dramatic finale at Furesø Golf Klub.

While the layout then was tree-lined, narrow and short by Tour-level standards, new host venue Great Northern, which becomes the 466th venue on the DP World Tour this week, is a complete contrast.

Opened for play in 2017, the modern Nicklaus Design course has hosted an event on the ECCO Tour for the past five years and is striking for its elevation changes and seven lakes that result in water being in play on as many as nine holes.

Unlike many others in the field, Højgaard has played it before and the five-time DP World Tour winner is excited to see it exposed to some of the world’s best for what is the penultimate event of the Closing Swing on the Race to Dubai.
