THIRD-ROUND UPDATE:

 Carla Bernat Escuder and Kate Smith-Stroh surge to the top of Guardian Championship Before Play Suspended due to Darkness

The leaderboard was upended in the third round of the 2026 Guardian Championship, as Carla Bernat Escuder and Kate Smith-Stroh each caught fire to leapfrog overnight leader Kaleiya Romero before darkness suspended play for the third consecutive day. Bernat Escuder, who entered the day tied for fifth, raced to 6-under through nine holes to take the outright lead at 14-under overall. Smith-Stroh matched her with a 7-under start of her own — the best score of the day — to sit one shot back at 13-under, tied with Romero.

Bernat Escuder, the 2025 Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion and the first player in that event’s history to card all three rounds in the 60s, is in her rookie Epson Tour season and already has a 36-hole lead on her resume this year at the Reliance Matrix Championship in May. Smith-Stroh, a Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, native who earned her LPGA Tour card through the 2024 Q-Series before losing it after one season, is fighting to work her way back through the Epson Tour in 2026.

Romero and Michelle Zhang, who sat in first and second place entering the day, were both 2-under through eight holes when play was suspended, sitting at 13-under and 12-under, respectively.

The third and final round will resume Monday, September 14, at 7:30 a.m. local time.
