7 maggio: Dopo un’attesa durata dieci anni per partecipare all’Asian Tour, il thailandese Tawit Polthai (immagine principale) non vede l’ora di dimostrare di meritare un posto sui grandi palcoscenici.

Nel primo round di giovedì del Taiwan Glass Taifong Open, torneo da 500.000 dollari, Tawit, diventato professionista nel 2016 e che ha giocato principalmente nell’Asian Development Tour prima di laurearsi quest’anno come campione dell’Ordine di Merito, ha realizzato un giro con sette birdie, chiudendo con un punteggio di 66 (-6) che gli ha garantito un vantaggio di un colpo su tre giocatori e di due colpi su un gruppo di otto.

Con un punteggio di 67, il thailandese in forma Charng-Tai Sudsom, il neozelandese Nick Voke e l’americano Shotaro Ban si sono piazzati secondi a pari merito. I beniamini di casa Tse-yu Chang e Yung-hua Liu erano tra coloro che si sono classificati quinti a pari merito con 68 colpi, insieme a un gruppo eterogeneo che comprendeva il singaporiano Ryan Ang, il gallese David Boote, l’inglese Steve Lewton, il sudafricano Ian Snyman e il cinese Sampson Zheng.

Il trentunenne Tawit ha vinto il PKNS Selangor Masters all’inizio della stagione e ha mantenuto il primato con altri cinque piazzamenti tra i primi dieci, concludendo come numero 1 del ranking ADT. Non è stato il miglior inizio di 2026 per il professionista di Bangkok, ma un solido 33° posto a pari merito al Singapore Open presented by Business Times ha contribuito a rafforzare la sua fiducia.

Tawit ha imbucato un lungo putt da 8 metri per il birdie alla buca 12, prima di commettere il suo unico errore alla buca 13. Aveva realizzato tre birdie nelle prime nove buche. La maggior parte dei giocatori ha affermato che i green erano molto più duri rispetto alle date di fine anno del torneo, ma il leader ha sfruttato al meglio il suo vantaggio iniziale.

“Il Singapore Open è andato piuttosto bene e questo mi ha dato fiducia. Non voglio pensare agli obiettivi per quest’anno, o a cosa voglio fare qui questa settimana. Voglio solo giocare bene a golf e godermi il mio tempo nell’Asian Tour”, ha detto Tawit.

Charng-Tai, reduce da una vittoria all’All Thailand Golf Tour la scorsa settimana, ha ammesso di aver faticato a trovare la giusta concentrazione dopo un bogey iniziale. I nervi si sono finalmente calmati e due birdie consecutivi alle buche 17 e 18 (par 5) lo hanno messo di buon umore per le seconde nove buche (le prime nove del percorso), dove ha realizzato birdie alla terza e all’ottava buca, e un eagle alla quinta.

Il trentaduenne di Chonburi, che ha vinto con nove colpi di vantaggio la scorsa settimana, sta cercando di riscattarsi dopo un frustrante 2025, quando si classificò 66° nell’Ordine di Merito dell’Asian Tour e perse la sua carta per un soffio.

“Vincere la settimana scorsa in Thailandia è stato fantastico. E adoro giocare a Taiwan. Mio padre è di qui”, ha detto Charng-Tai. “Oggi non ho usato molto il driver. Volevo solo tenere la palla in gioco. Il momento clou è stato sicuramente l’eagle alla quinta buca, dove ho imbucato con un chip da circa 35 metri.”

Il trentunenne Voke punta a ottenere il suo miglior risultato nell’Asian Tour da quando si classificò terzo allo Shinhan Donghae Open nel suo anno d’esordio nel 2018.

Apart from a rather disappointing tied 53rd place at his home New Zealand Open presented by Hillbrook Resort, Voke has not finished outside 26th in 10 starts this year, and is intent on improving on that form at the Taifong Golf Club.

“I got off to a hot start early, made birdies on one, two and five… but nothing crazy, to be honest. Like the holes you should birdie, I birdied. And the holes you should par, I got up and down for my pars. Nothing crazy, but really happy with my day,” said Voke.

“I’ve been playing well for a while now. It’s kind of nice, because I’ve been on the other side of it. Golf can be a really hard game. It can beat us up. Fortunately, the last couple of years, it has treated me really well. I’ve learned a few things, and there are a few more things that I now understand in life. Hopefully, keep it going.”

Ban, whose mother’s side of the family is from Chinese Taipei and he has been living in the country since 2023, gave his fans plenty to cheer on the back nine after starting from the 10th tee and making the turn at even-par despite an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. He then made birdies on the first, second, fourth, fifth and the seventh holes.

Suradit made a triple bogey seven in his round, but bounced back nicely to finish with four birdies. He opened with three birdies in his first five holes, before hitting his tee shot out of bounds on the par-4 sixth, and three-putting for the triple.

“It was hard to make the triple after such a good start. I just told my caddie on the seventh tee, let’s pretend that we haven’t made any birdies so far and let’s go and get some from this hole onwards,” said Suradit, who finished second in Mercuries Taiwan Masters down the road last year.

The Taiwan Glass Taifong Open is usually played in November, but has been brought forward this year to May at the request of the Tour.
