New vehicle offerings in the U.S. have never been more competitive, but the editors at Green Car Journal (GCJ), one of the most influential publications covering environmentally friendly vehicles and technologies, say that Mitsubishi vehicles continually rise to the top. Today, GCJ’s editors named the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback, an all-new electric vehicle, as their 2027 Green SUV of the Year. The Green SUV of the Year Award recognizes sport-utility vehicles that excel in environmental performance while offering style and versatility.

Making this award even more special, it comes on the heels of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid winning GCJ‘s Family Green Car of the Year award in 2019, and then for four consecutive years from 2023 – 2026, the last one sharing the 2026 award with the Outlander mild-hybrid. That award marked the first time in the program’s 21-year history that sister models claimed the prestigious overall title.

“The stylish Eclipse Sportback EV is a strategic addition to the Mitsubishi lineup and a deserving winner of 2027 Green SUV of the Year,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “At a time when some others are scaling back, Mitsubishi is expanding its electrified choices with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and now battery-electric models. Importantly, the Eclipse Sportback EV hits a sweet spot in the market that values a mainstream compact crossover that’s well-appointed, fun to drive, and comes with substantial range with convenient charging options that instill driving confidence.”

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is in the midst of a multi-year business plan dubbed Momentum 2030. Two of the pillars of this plan describe an intent to add electrification across the brand’s lineup, and to introduce new or renewed vehicles on an annual basis through 2030. This award plays into both of those pillars, as the Eclipse Sportback will soon take its place in Mitsubishi showrooms alongside the mild-hybrid Outlander and Plug-in Hybrid Outlander models. Three separate vehicles, three separate electrified powertrain choices.

“It’s a huge honor to be recognized – again – by the editors at Green Car Journal, and these repeat accolades are yet another key reason for shoppers to visit a Mitsubishi Motors showroom,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of MMNA. “We believe strongly in presenting our customers with choices: we offer conventional gasoline, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, all with incredible value and content. Families have more options than ever before, and the Eclipse Sportback is an exciting new option for those who choose to go completely electric without any compromise.”

The all-new 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV continues Mitsubishi Motors’ electrification journey, which goes back to the 1970s when it first started developing fully electric vehicles in Japan. The world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, went on sale in select markets in 2009, and arrived in North America in late 2011. A year later, the Outlander PHEV, the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, was introduced globally, arriving in North America in 2018.

Eclipse Sportback is a thoroughly modern electric vehicle, and features a J1772 plug that can be used for both Level 1 and Level 2 charging at home or in other charging situations. Charging on Level 2, Eclipse Sportback can charge from 20-80% in 6.5 hours. The vehicle also offers SAE’s North American Charging System (NACS) compatibility, offering access to the Supercharger network. With charging capability up to 150 kW, Level 3 charging will allow the vehicle to fast-charge from 10% to 80% state-of-charge in approximately 35 minutes. Regardless of the charging method, charging time and capacity may vary based on power source, ambient temperature, battery temperature, condition, age and use of vehicle accessories while charging.
