As the start of the 2026 Team Racing World Championship in Stockholm gets ever closer, the event is shaping up to be historic on and off the water. Staged on the stadium-style waters of Riddarfjärden in the heart of the city from 12-16 August 2026, the championship could be defined as much by pure, sailing passion as it is by ground-breaking technological innovation.
The Human Element: Coming to have fun – and defend the title
At its core, team racing has always been about camaraderie, fast-paced tactics, and the joy of competition. As the 12 national teams lock in their training schedules for Stockholm, they all say the same thing: above all else, they are coming to have fun.
That mindset is shared even by those carrying the weight of expectation. Skipper Will Bailey and his reigning world champion team from the Corinthian Yacht Club (USA) are returning to defend their title after winning the championship in Newport. Transitioning to the event’s identical J/80 fleet presents a fresh test, but one the champions are embracing with energy.
“Racing in J/80s is new for us, so there’s been a steep learning curve. Being able to train right in the city, on a harbour course similar to Stockholm, has been incredibly valuable,” says Bailey. “The races are short, intense, and incredibly close. Anyone can win any race, which makes it exciting for sailors and spectators alike.
“Last year there was much more pressure because we really wanted to win. Now we’re looking forward to enjoying the event. If we sail freely and have fun, I think the results will follow.”
The unique energy of competing in the close quarters of Stockholm’s stunning waterfront against 96 of the world’s best sailors has the international fleet brimming with anticipation.
The Tech Revolution: Experience the action up close with AI
While world-class crews focus on bringing their absolute best to the water, an innovation for the crowds watching from land will place spectators at the heart of the action. For years, team racing’s biggest hurdle for spectators has been its fast-moving tactical complexity. To the untrained eye, a flurry of mark roundings, tactical luffing, and dynamic right-of-way combinations can be difficult to read from shore.
ViewRegatta, a new technology platform developed by Swedish start-up Regattify, aims to change that with its public debut at the 2026 World Championship.
Developed by competitive sailor and aerospace engineer Martin Alsén alongside telemetry experts Ulf Ekstedt and Cindy Han, the system aims to replicate the high-end broadcast experience seen at the most exhilarating events at a fraction of the cost by using smartphones mounted on each boat to stream real-time GPS, gyroscope, and video data.
The real breakthrough, however, lies in the artificial intelligence driving the platform:
-
Real-time Tactical Analysis: The AI processes live positioning alongside the Racing Rules of Sailing to decode split-second tactical plays as they happen.
-
Predictive Commentary: Beyond describing current positions, the AI explains why tactical decisions are made and predicts upcoming manoeuvres before they unfold.
-
Accessible Visualisations: Viewers on shore can follow 3D digital twins of the race showing boat speeds, wind shifts, and live onboard feeds right from their mobile devices.
A new standard for Stadium Sailing
This blend of human determination and smart technology creates a dynamic setting for Stockholm 2026.
On the water, defending champions and hungry challengers will bring the intensity, skill, and passion that make team racing unforgettable. On shore along Norr Mälarstrand and around Riddarfjärden, cutting-edge AI will ensure every fan catches every tactical nuance.
Whether you are watching from the quays near City Hall or tuning in from around the globe, the Team Racing World Championships 2026 aims to set a new standard for how sailing is contested and experienced.
