Difende il titolo Nick Dunlap, 21enne di Huntsville (Alabama) che lo scorso anno è divenuto il solo giocatore capace di imporsi nella gara da dilettante, con la prerogativa di essere l’unico nella categoria, insieme a Tiger Woods, ad aver conquistato l’US Junior Amateur e l’US Amateur. Unica differenza, Tiger ha vinto per tre anni di fila entrambi i tornei. Passato quasi subito tra i pro, Dunlap ha poi concesso il bis nel Barracuda Championship (formula stableford modificata), ma successivamente solo in due occasioni è tornato tra i top ten, l’ultima la scorsa settimana nel Sony Open alle Hawaii (decimo).
Nel field 20 giocatori tra i primi 50 della classifica mondiale tra i quali calamita l’attenzione Wyndham Clark (n. 7), ma si attendono buone cose anche da Patrick Cantlay (n. 12), Billy Horschel (n. 16), Sam Burns (n. 20), Justin Thomas (n. 21), terzo lo scorso anno, e dal coreano Sungjae Im (n. 19). Senza dimenticare Brian Harman, i canadesi Adam Hadwin e Nick Taylor, a segno nel Sony Open, il colombiano Nico Echevarria, in crescita e secondo dopo playoff domenica scorsa, il coreano Si-woo Kim, vincitore nel 2021, il sudafricano Christiaan Bezuidenhout, runner up nel 2024, e tre atleti che, come Manassero, hanno ottenuto una delle dieci ‘carte’ per il circuito assegnate ai primi non altrimenti esenti nell’ordine di merito del DP World Tour: lo svedese Jesper Svensson, il francese Antoine Rozner e il giapponese Rikuya Hoshino.
La manifestazione si svolge con formula pro-am e per tre round i concorrenti giocheranno insieme agli amateur alternandosi sui percorsi del PGA West Pete Dye Stadium Course, del PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course e del La Quinta Country Club. Poi i primi 65 pro in graduatoria e i pari merito al 65° posto termineranno il torneo sullo Stadium Course.
Non è un debutto per Manassero, che ha già disputato alcune gare specifiche del circuito fino al 2014 (oltre a quelle comuni a tutti i tour anche successivamente, per un totale complessivo di 38 presenze), con la differenza che ora avrà la possibilità di programmare organicamente la stagione, non affidandosi solo a partecipazioni random. Molinari riparte per la nuova annata con l’obiettivo di riprendere il passo che più gli compete. Per entrambi, poi, l’impegno massimo di entrare nel Team Europe alla prossima Ryder Cup. Il montepremi è di 8.800.000 dollari con prima moneta di 1.584.000 dollari.
La storia – Nato nel 1960 come Palm Springs Desert Golf Classic, sulla distanza di 90 buche e vinto da Arnold Palmer, che detiene il record di successi con cinque, l’evento ha poi cambiato denominazione per nove volte. Come detto, il grande Arnold Palmer lo ha fatto suo per cinque volte, mentre tutti gli altri plurivincitori si sono limitati alla doppietta: Billy Casper, John Mahaffey, Corey Pavin, John Cook, Phil Mickleson, Bill Haas, Hudson Swafford, lo spagnolo Jon Rahm e Johnny Miller, il solo a realizzarla consecutiva, cosa non riuscita nemmeno a Palmer. Oltre a Dunlap e a Im saranno al via altri quattro past winner con scarse possibilità di ripetersi: Jason Dufner (2016), il citato Bill Haas (2010, 2015), il venezuelano Jhonattan Vegas (2011), e Charley Hoffman (2007).
